GT Corporation performs works on cleaning of oil contaminated soils in oil terminals and port facility areas. Cleaning technologies have been developed in two main directions:
soil cleaning directly at the facility, without soil excavation;
excavation of polluted soil, with subsequent cleaning in special plants.
The advantage of the first method is that the cleaning operations are possible
keeping the structures in operational conditions. After completing cleaning operations the technological system remains and could be reused, if additional pollution occurs. In this case, the engineering solutions are based on the application of direct steam to the polluted soil, and pumping out of the polluted water from specially installed drainage system.
While polluted soil excavation occurs, the soil is treated in purification units by special detergent-water solution. As a result of cleaning, the oil residual concentration in soil is reduced to allowable values and the soil can be reused for different production purposes.
Both of developed cleaning technologies of oil contaminated soils in port areas were tested experimentally in laboratory conditions, as well as in field real environment, and have been operating in port facilities in the Baltic Sea region.
